But sometimes, certain destinations call out to you… and bring you back.
This time, as part of our mission for Eden Villages, we were lucky enough to return to the island of Ré. And what a pleasure it was to be back on the beaches, on the cycle paths, in the soft, iodized atmosphere, with its smiles, its craftsmen, its homemade jams and its melting chocolate!
Ce séjour nous a rappelé que l’on peut concilier vie bohème de campeur, rencontres humaines, plaisirs simples et esthétique soignée. Que l’essentiel se trouve parfois dans un lever de soleil sur la mer, une discussion avec un artisan, ou une dégustation d’huîtres face à l’océan.
A 5-star cocoon between beach and marsh
We parked our van at Camping L’Océan et Spa, in La Couarde-sur-Mer, a member of the Eden Villages network and nestled between sea and marsh. A bubble of nature where you can hear the birds in the morning and where everything has been thought of for campers who love authenticity.
It’s easy to see why some holidaymakers have been coming back for over 50 years:
- A warm welcome,
- Bicycle rental directly on site,
- A wellness area with spa to relax your muscles after a day of hiking,
- Large, shady pitches, ideal for tents, vans or motorhomes, just 50 meters from the sea.
Mais ce qui nous a particulièrement touchés, ce sont les petites attentions et l’ancrage local du lieu. Mention spéciale pour l’épicerie, où l’on retrouve les douceurs emblématiques de l’île… qui racontent bien plus qu’un simple plaisir gustatif.
From sweets to family history
Among these sweets are two unmissable nuggets: l’île de Ré chocolates and jams from the bell tower.
L’aventure chocolatée débute avec la famille Vallégeas, présente sur l’île depuis 1975. Daniel Vallégeas, artisan boulanger-pâtissier-chocolatier, crée la biscuiterie de Ré à Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, un lieu où la tradition rime avec qualité : beurre AOP Charentes-Poitou, recettes sans additifs ni conservateurs. Galettes, sablés, langues de chat, palets à la fleur de sel… autant de douceurs aux saveurs simples et authentiques.
In 1995, his son Éric joined the family business and launched the chocolate workshop in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, giving birth to the Île de Ré Chocolats brand. Here, he imagines original creations blending terroir and creativity: Fort Boyard in chocolate, pommes de terre de l’île de Ré, a crunchy hazelnut praline, and many other specialties. The workshop also offers guided tours, where young and old alike can discover the secrets of cocoa and artisanal production.
Côté confitures, la tradition familiale se perpétue à Ars-en-Ré, au pied du célèbre clocher noir et blanc qui veille sur le village. Les Confitures du Clocher sont une véritable institution locale. Tout commence dans les années 70 avec Claude, producteur de fraises, et sa femme Françoise, qui se lancent dans la confection maison de confitures quelques années plus tard. Aujourd’hui, leur fils Bertrand, maître confiturier, perpétue ce savoir-faire artisanal avec passion.
Trois générations se transmettent des recettes précieusement gardées, réalisées avec des fruits cueillis à point, du sucre et surtout beaucoup d’amour. Sur chaque pot, le clocher d’Ars figure en clin d’œil à l’âme de ce terroir unique. Les saveurs authentiques régalent petits et grands, que ce soit au petit déjeuner, dans un yaourt ou sur une belle tartine.

Meet the people who bring the island to life
One of the greatest pleasures of this interlude was the opportunity to meet the people who embody the island on a daily basis.
Antony turned the microphone over to some inspiring local personalities:
- Valérie, a saunière with a passion for her profession and administrator of the Ile de Ré sauniers’ cooperative.
- Sébastien Bélier, oyster farmer and founder of Dealer d’Iode, offers a unique experience in epicurean oyster tasting.
Leurs voix, leurs histoires et leur attachement à ce territoire sont à retrouver dans une série de podcasts réalisés pour le blog En Route.
These encounters reminded us just howlively, authentic and inspiring theisland of Ré is, far beyond its postcard image.
Explore differently: by bike, rollerblades… or on foot
On our previous trip, we didn’t have time to explore everything. This time, we took the time to explore less touristy but equally charming corners of the city:
- La Couarde-sur-Mer, with its narrow, flower-filled streets and peaceful atmosphere. And for fashionistas, this is where you’ll find one of Émile et Ida‘s boutiques. More than just a children’s clothing store, it’s a place that embodies a philosophy: to offer ethical, sustainable collections made mainly in Europe, combining comfort, elegance and poetry. Created by Delphine Papiernik, the brand draws its inspiration from nature, simplicity and respect for the passing of time, values that resonate perfectly with the island’s slow travel spirit.
- Le Bois-Plage, perfect for strolling along the wooden footbridge that runs alongside the sea,
- Ars-en-Ré, one of France’s most beautiful villages, with its black-and-white bell tower.
Another must: artisanal ice cream from La Martinière, available on the port of La Flotte, but also on the port of Saint Martin! It’s hard to choose between the many flavors(with special mention for the caramel fleur de sel or the more original oyster or asparagus flavors!), but it’s impossible to go wrong: everything is delicious.
D’ailleurs, en restant sur Saint-Martin-de-Ré, ce que j’adore sur l’île, c’est cette alchimie unique entre nature, élégance et bohème. On peut vivre pieds nus, en maillot de bain, et en même temps croiser des boutiques ultra créatives. Un équilibre que peu de lieux savent préserver. C’est là que j’ai eu un gros coup de cœur pour Le Magasin de la République, un concept store qui propose une sélection pointue de vêtements éthiques, dont la marque Homecore, imaginée par un ancien danseur de hip-hop. Et on y trouve de belles idées cadeaux (ou auto-cadeaux).
Among the other suspended moments of this escapade, I also remember a magical sunset at Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, sheltered against the small lifeboat facing the ocean.
And then… a little personal challenge: I got out my rollerblades again to take to the cycle paths, skirt the marshes, feel the sea air in my hair… Unfortunately, the most suitable paths for skateboarding or rollerblading are those along the roads. So, for ease of use, I still recommend a bike or tandem.
My final tips for a slow Retais holiday
– Choose off-season periods: May-June or early September are ideal (excluding long weekends). Temperatures are mild, shopkeepers are available and bike paths are almost all yours.
– Goûtez aux produits du terroir : les douceurs évoquées plus haut, mais aussi le sel, la bière locale, les savons, les huîtres… L’île regorge de trésors à consommer ou à offrir.
You can’t visit the island of Ré. You have to live it. And it stays with you for a long, long time… in your heart.
