Unfortunately, a few weeks before our arrival, a serious political crisis broke out. For security reasons, we hesitated for a long time before crossing the border from Ecuador. In the end, it was a show of hands that kept us going. Morgan and Antony were in favor of going anyway, while I was more inclined to change our plans and head for Colombia, which borders Ecuador.

Today, I have no regrets whatsoever about our decision to continue our journey to Peru. We spent a month and a half there, and despite the complicated conditions and the closure of Machu Picchu, we had some great times and visited some fabulous sites.

So, rather than give you our travel diary, this time I’d like to reveal my 5 favorites or experiences.

At the end of the article, I’ll also give you the sites we weren’t able to visit because of the various events in the country, but which I think are well worth a visit. I hope I’ll have the opportunity to visit them again.

Let’s go for the experiences I recommend:

Sandboarding in the Ica desert

When you think of Peru, you immediately imagine llamas in the mountains, Peruvians with their bonnets and panpipes… Much less desert and dunes. And yet, the Peruvian coasts are magnificent, reminiscent of Moroccan or Egyptian landscapes.

Situated 4 hours from the capital Lima, the town of Ica is a very pleasant stopover on the way down to Nazca and Arequipa in the south of the country.

The town itself may not be exceptional, but the sunsets over the dunes above the Huacachina oasis are well worth the detour.

The town is also of great interest to board sports enthusiasts. It’s one of the best places to try sandboarding.

Sandboarding is snowboarding’s cousin on the snow. Except here, the snow is sand!

For those of you who are motivated to give it a try, I recommend that you go through Sandboarding Peru, as I did. They have real snowboarding equipment (boots, helmets, etc.) and speak English, which comes in handy when you need advice on descents. They also take photos and videos of your different descents.

I really loved this experience, even though it’s a very different sensation from snowboarding, because the supports are the opposite! You have to be more on your rear supports, like when you’re in powder snow, rather than on the slope towards the front.

What’s really nice is that there’s no fear of falling in the sand.

To get to the various summits, a collective buggy makes the trip. Admittedly, it’s not environmentally friendly, but the moment is a real attraction! The driver masters his buggy perfectly, taking you down the dunes like a rollercoaster. Guaranteed thrills between each descent.

At the end of the evening, you can enjoy the sunset over the desert. A feast for the eyes and memories to last a lifetime.

I paid around 65 euros for 3 people (including one who was only a passenger in the buggy). I think that’s reasonable for South America. And above all, after talking to the instructor, who is a professional in the discipline, he said that Ica is one of the best spots because, unlike Iquique, Atacama or Valparaiso (where we also went!), there are lots of dunes that you can go down, whereas the others always go up and down the same dune.

Hiking in the Huaraz region

400 kms north of the capital lies Huaraz. This town, at an altitude of 3,052 metres, was largely destroyed by an earthquake in May 1970. More than 20,000 people lost their lives in this tragic event.

Today, Huaraz is renowned for its trekking and hiking. In fact, the town is the starting point for numerous outings to incredible natural landscapes.

And as surprising as it may seem, the city is still not very popular with tourists. That’s why we really enjoyed this breath of fresh air, a little removed from mass tourism.

We’re not big on trekking, but we were really taken with the region. There’s something for everyone here. From families to experienced hikers, there’s something for everyone.

In Huaraz, despite the fact that we’re at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, virtually no hotel or home has heating. So bring warm clothes.

We stayed with Christian, a charming host who owns the casa bicentenario. A small building with rooms, one of which has a lovely view of the surrounding mountains.

At the time of our visit, the building was being renovated, but we were able to stay there at an unbeatable price. We were also able to go for walks with Christian and his dog. A great way to learn more about the history of the country. There was even a space heater, a luxury for the region 😉

To acclimatize to the altitude, I recommend waiting at least a day before heading for the peaks. Take a stroll through the city center and under its arches, and you’ll find little vendors from whom you can buy coca leaves or caramelos. They’ll help you cope with the altitude.

You can also start the day gently by climbing to the mirador alto de rataquenua. A walk on the heights of Huaraz for a pretty viewpoint and a good lunch in the restaurant at the top.

We then took advantage of our stay to go on two excursions:

– Pastoruri Glacier

We used an agency to get there, as it’s quite a distance from Huaraz (count 50 soles per person + 30 soles per person for park entrance). There are stops for breakfast and lunch, but I recommend you bring your own picnic and snacks.

We really enjoyed this outing, as it was one of the first times we’d been able to discover a glacier.

This is one of the last glaciers in the tropical zone of South America. Covering an area of 8 km2, it has unfortunately lost over 20% of its ice in almost 35 years. And it’s sad but true… it could disappear in the years to come.

Located at an altitude of over 5,000 metres, it is part of Huascaran National Park, which is also a magical place to visit, with its breathtakingly beautiful flora and fauna.

A stop is made on the way to admire a typical Andean plant: the puya raimondi. This immense ball of prickly leaves has the distinction of living between 70 and 100 years, dying after its single flowering. It can grow up to 3 metres tall, and its flowering stem can measure up to 9 metres!

Near these flowers, we also observe natural phenomena, such as a spring of bubbling water.

Once you’ve arrived at the parking lot below the glacier, it’s less than an hour’s walk to reach it.

With the altitude, don’t hesitate to take your time, as you’ll soon be out of breath. When you reach the top, the view is beautiful, but sad when you think of the consequences of climate change. It becomes even sadder when you see tourists near and on the glacier, taking photos in the snow despite the prohibitions posted on the signs.

– Laguna Shurup

The good news about this hike is that you can take a shared minibus for 20 soles per person! Just ask for directions to Pitec. The collectivos that go by are on Avenida Agustin Gamarra, just past the crossroads with Antonio Raymondi. The destination is indicated on the front of the minibus. Ask the day before to find out what time they leave. It then takes 45 minutes to reach the trailhead for the hike.

On the other hand, be sure to ask what time the last collectivo leaves and tell it that you’ll be taking it. It will usually be waiting for you in the parking lot.

Nicknamed the Magic Lagoon of 7 colors, it is less touristy than the other lagoons offered by the agencies, but well worth the detour. It’s situated at an altitude of 4,450 metres, but can be done in a day. Allow around two hours for the ascent and an hour and a half for the descent. With a picnic lunch at the summit, it’s an ideal way to enjoy the experience of being virtually alone in the world.

The trail is well marked. These lines have been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1994.

What’s most surprising is the sheer size of these figures and the sheer size of the site, with more than 500 km2 of them.

Discovered in 1927, these lines are the work of the Nazca people, a pre-Inca culture that developed between 300 BC and 800 AD.

The first anthropologist to study these geoglyphs was American: Paus Kosok in 1939. But it was above all Maria Reiche who devoted her life to mapping and understanding the lines. She died in Lima at the age of 95 in 1998.

In fact, while we were there, we were able to attend a conference in the hotel that owns the room where she stayed when she came: the Hotel Nazca Lines. The lecture, presented in French in a small planetarium inside the hotel, was educational and really good for understanding the history of the lines and who Maria Reiche was, the German woman who dedicated her life to their discovery.

To visit the lines, it’s possible to take a plane tour, but our backpacker budget meant we took a collectivo to Palpa instead. We stopped at the viewpoints and hitchhiked home!

Alternatively, take a guided tour or cab.

Bathing in Abancay’s free natural thermal baths, untouched by mass tourism

Many short-term visitors to Peru don’t take the time to travel by bus between the west of the country and the east towards Cuzco. It’s a pity, because the route through the Andes is well worth seeing, and there are many little nuggets to be found along the way.

You can make this trip in two stops to avoid endless hours on the bus.

The first stop can be made in Puquio. The second, and most interesting, can be made in Abancay, a few hours from Cuzco.

It was thanks to a friend living in Peru that we came across this good “visit” plan.

Nearby is a beautiful colonial bridge: Pachachaca. Colectivo number 5 takes you there for 3 soles per person.

To get there, it’s a short walk. Do as the locals do and go around the side (there’s an opening through which you can enter the site).

Then continue walking for about half an hour. You’ll see signs indicating the thermal baths. Don’t be afraid to jump over a few small rivers… But at the end, I assure you, the show is guaranteed.

Remember to bring a hat and sun cream, as there is very little shade on site. A picnic is also a must if you want to enjoy the place for most of the day.

The place is little known to tourists, only to locals. However, as is often the case in Peru, garbage has invaded the surrounding area.

If you’re staying for another day, you can also take a colectivo (2.50 soles p/ pers) to the viewpoint. The view over Abancay is great, and it’s the place to be for young people and families at weekends.

On a round-the-world trip, it’s hard to recommend restaurants because we don’t do many, but for once, I can suggest Pizzeria Napoles: a treat at acceptable prices if you take a large format with several people.

Visit the Sacred Valley on your own from Urubamba

As a tourist, it’s often much easier to let yourself be guided around the sites by an agency. It’s less organization and less hassle to find a way to get there.

According to our observations, most tourists travel to Cuzco and organize their schedules from there. No doubt due to a lack of knowledge.

But thanks to our friend Sébastien, who lives in the region, we did things differently, in other words, completely autonomously. I’d like to share our experience with you, because we really enjoyed getting up close and personal with the people and their culture.

The Sacred Valley stretches along the Urubamba River, from Pisac to Ollantaytambo. Most of the valley’s attractions (Maras salt flats, Moray, Chinchero) are just a few kilometers from the town of Urubamba. What’s more, being situated below 3,000 metres above sea level, it has the advantage of a better climate than Cuzco, where it’s cooler.

There are so many advantages to considering staying in this city for a few days to visit the sites of the Sacred Valley. You’ll save yourself hours of driving and hurried sightseeing. What’s more, you can easily take public transport from here, which, for a few soles, will take you to these magical places and enable you to meet the local people at the same time. Cheaper, more authentic… cool!

We stayed in a really perfect hotel in terms of value for money. A small apartment with a garden, a hammock and hummingbirds in the trees – a little paradise! I heartily recommend the Hospedage Venka hotel.

To kick off your visit to the Sacred Valley, I’d recommend taking a day out to explore the Maras…. salinas on foot! Yes, when I say that Urubamba is perfect, I’m not lying.

The Maras salinas

This hike is a breeze. You can then spend 2 or 3 days visiting the city (its Plaza de Armas, etc.) and the nearby Boleto archeological sites.

We were able to walk up to visit Sacsayhuaman, a fortress built from imposing blocks of stone (the largest weighs 300 tonnes!) and offering a magnificent view of Cusco.

Nearby (less interesting, I think), you can see Qenqo, a ceremonial site where sacrifices and mummification of Inca nobles took place. There’s a zigzag carved into the rock where llama blood or chicha was poured, which was then interpreted by the priest.

For our part, we were less surprised by the latest archaeological sites at Tambomachay and Puca Pucara.

That’s it! I hope this article has inspired you to visit Peru differently.

With the blockades and the political crisis that was underway at the time we were in the country, we weren’t able to go down to Arequipa and admire Lake Titicaca, but I know that these are obviously sites to see if conditions allow.

Last but not least, in the Cusco region, there’s the “Rainbow Mountain”, which is very famous because it’s so Instagrammable. We weren’t able to go there because the roads were blocked, but if you’re interested, there’s a less strenuous and less touristy alternative: “Palcoyo”. I’d recommend it if you don’t want to find yourself in a crowd of tourists.

As usual, don’t hesitate to leave me comments or questions, I’d be delighted to answer them.

See you soon for new adventures!

Peru was one of the countries on our round-the-world itinerary.
