In 1953, David Ostroff, a teacher from New York, organized exchanges in the United States, while A. Lehmann (a teacher in Switzerland) and G.J. Beltman (from the Netherlands) organized exchanges in Europe. The first network became HomeLink, the second InterVac, two of the main platforms still in operation today.  <\/p>\n<p>Today, there are many home exchange sites to choose from, depending on the specialization of each site. Some sites are dedicated solely to housing in France, others mainly to family housing, teachers or researchers, and others specialize in high-end housing. The vast majority of these sites require you to pay an annual membership fee (usually between \u20ac100 and \u20ac160) to use their platform.  <\/p>\n<p>The main housing exchange sites are :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeexchange.fr\/?&#038;utm_source=influencer_jupette_et_salopette&#038;utm_medium=instagram&#038;utm_content=&#038;utm_campaign=FR_Influence_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HomeExchange<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.switchome.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SwitcHome<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/homelink.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HomeLink<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.intervac-homeexchange.com\/price-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intervac<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echangersamaison.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Exchange<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Initially, we started with SwitcHome, then GuesttoGuest.<strong> When the two sites GuesttoGuest and TrocMaison were combined into a single group in early 2017 to become HomeExchange, we naturally migrated to this new site. <\/strong>With their twofold experience, it&#8217;s clear that they offer the most comprehensive range of houses and apartments in the world today. What&#8217;s also interesting is the profile checking, insurance and customer service that contribute to making this practice completely safe, with no financial transactions between members. <\/p>\n<h2>Home exchange: more than just savings, it&#8217;s a philosophy of life<\/h2>\n<p>When talking to friends about this subject, we often come across two types of profile: those interested in trying it out, and those who will never make their property available.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s very interesting because it&#8217;s here that we discover whether we&#8217;re more materialistic, more attached to our possessions or not.<\/p>\n<p>For me, it&#8217;s funny because I&#8217;m clearly an in-between! I love beautiful things, I love to splurge and treat myself to whatever I feel like. However, my<strong>&#8220;open to others&#8221;<\/strong> side makes it easy for me to <strong>trust others to leave my possessions<\/strong>. That&#8217;s why, when my darling introduced me to the concept and asked me if I didn&#8217;t mind strangers occupying our home, I immediately replied that I was very much in favor of giving it a try.   <\/p>\n<p>And today, after more than 50 exchanges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeexchange.fr\/?&#038;utm_source=influencer_jupette_et_salopette&#038;utm_medium=instagram&#038;utm_content=&#038;utm_campaign=FR_Influence_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the HomeExchange site<\/a>, I can only say: I was so right to say yes! When I think back on all the crazy places we&#8217;ve been able to visit, while<strong> saving on accommodation costs<\/strong> and <strong>forging links with hosts from all over the world<\/strong>, I have absolutely no regrets &#8211; quite the contrary. I hope it continues for a long time to come, and above all that it doesn&#8217;t lose any of its <strong>authenticity<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the democratization of this type of practice is positive, but it also leads to certain behaviors that are unfortunately not exactly what we&#8217;re looking for. I&#8217;m thinking in particular of people who think they&#8217;ve found the right plan for an evening or a weekend to come and party with friends &#8220;for free&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Another disturbing change is those who confuse AirBnB with a home exchange site, for example by charging excessive household fees, when normally no money is exchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I&#8217;m keeping my fingers crossed, but for the moment, it&#8217;s still on the bangs. When we see this, we take the liberty of gently explaining that this is not the basic spirit. <\/p>\n<h2>How home exchange works<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeexchange.fr\/?&#038;utm_source=influencer_jupette_et_salopette&#038;utm_medium=instagram&#038;utm_content=&#038;utm_campaign=FR_Influence_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HomeExchange<\/a> home exchange system works as follows: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Registration:<\/strong> you&#8217;ll start by registering and paying an annual membership fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating a profile<\/strong>: once you&#8217;ve registered, you&#8217;ll be able to create a detailed profile describing your property: house or apartment, bedroom etc&#8230; This includes information on the location of your property, the features of your home, the facilities, and of course you can add photos to showcase the property to other members. When you create your ad, the site will offer you points for a first exchange. After that, you&#8217;ll need to start exchanging to collect more points.<\/p>\n<p><em>My advice<\/em>: make sure you <strong>have some good photos to show off your home<\/strong>. It&#8217;s silly, but just like a meeting, you have to make people want to come and stay with you. But be careful not to be misleading either. A disappointed person is likely to give you a negative review, which could be bad for you. Be as authentic as possible. For example, if you have an old property, make it clear. It&#8217;s <strong>important to inspire confidence.<\/strong> To do this, you can use the listings already on the site.      <\/p>\n<p><em>Good to know too<\/em>:<strong> you can put different ads on your profile.<\/strong> Do you have a primary residence but also a second home? Would you like to offer your home, but also just a bedroom? It&#8217;s perfectly possible to put both on the site! We do it very often, and it&#8217;s no problem at all. We have two bathrooms, so guests have a little privacy. As for the kitchen, we give them the choice of using it or not.   <\/p>\n<p><strong>Search and contact<\/strong>: once your profile has been created, you can browse other users&#8217; ads to find properties that might interest you. Feel free to use the filters to refine your search according to specific criteria, such as destination, house size, availability dates, etc. <\/p>\n<p>When a property interests you, you can then contact the owner to discuss a possible exchange. Don&#8217;t hesitate to send numerous messages! The experience is less immediate than on a rental site. This will increase your chances of finding a property.   <\/p>\n<p><em>My advice<\/em>: personalize your messages. Starting off with the first names of the people listed in the ad makes for a more convivial exchange. You can explain why you want to visit this country, or introduce yourself. Once again, the idea is to inspire confidence in the person who&#8217;s going to read you. In this message, don&#8217;t hesitate to show that you share the community&#8217;s values. For example, we always make it clear that we&#8217;re very respectful of other people&#8217;s property, and that they can consult the reviews of our previous exchanges to see for themselves.     <\/p>\n<h3>Simultaneous exchange or against Guestpoints &#8211; it&#8217;s all possible!<\/h3>\n<p>The real strength of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeexchange.fr\/?&#038;utm_source=influencer_jupette_et_salopette&#038;utm_medium=instagram&#038;utm_content=&#038;utm_campaign=FR_Influence_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HomeExchange site<\/a> is the sheer number of offers available (over 270,000 homes, more than 160,000 members in 145 countries) and, above all, the <strong>possibility of making two types of exchange: a simultaneous exchange or against Guestpoints.<\/strong> Using these options, we can find the type of exchange that best suits our needs and travel planning preferences.<\/p>\n<p>Explanations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Simultaneous exchange<\/strong>: in a simultaneous exchange, both parties exchange their homes at the same time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GuestPoints exchange<\/strong>: this is an option offered by HomeExchange that means members don&#8217;t necessarily have to make a direct reciprocal exchange. Instead, members can host other members in their home and earn &#8220;GuestPoints&#8221; for each stay they make. They can then use these GuestPoints to stay in other members&#8217; homes, even if the latter don&#8217;t come directly to their home in return.   <strong>This allows greater flexibility in travel planning and expands exchange possibilities within the HomeExchange community.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Finalize the exchange<\/strong>: once you and your hosts have agreed on the dates and duration of the exchange, the host will pre-approve the exchange, leaving you to validate the stay. This ensures that both parties are committed to the exchange, and that the details are clear and agreed. <\/p>\n<p>Please note that it is sometimes possible to ask the host to modify the number of points per night if you are short of a few points to finalize the exchange. We&#8217;ve done this in the past, especially for longer periods, such as a week, which represents a certain number of points exchanged. <\/p>\n<p><em>My advice<\/em>: <strong>before the host pre-approves the exchange, you can organize a video chat, for example<\/strong>. It&#8217;s much nicer and, I think, allows you to &#8220;get a feel for the people and things you&#8217;re dealing with&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the agreed date, you either exchange each other&#8217;s accommodation for the duration of the exchange, or collect the keys in exchange for GuestsPoints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hosting in your own home<\/strong>: yes, <strong>home exchange is a two-way street!<\/strong> To be able to take advantage of the accommodations offered by other site members around the world, you&#8217; <strong>ll need to welcome people into your home<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><em>My advice<\/em>: when you&#8217;re hosting, <strong>be sure to leave a little something in the fridge<\/strong>, like a bottle or beers and softs, so that your guests can enjoy an aperitif on the first day, or a brioche for breakfast. <strong>Also leave a guidebook so people can find out how to use your accommodation<\/strong> and what to visit in the surrounding area, with detailed information about your home, surroundings, local attractions, transport and restaurant recommendations, etc.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>the other hand, if you&#8217;re the guest &#8211; usually as part of an exchange &#8211; you always arrive with a little something from home<\/strong> (a bottle, chocolates, a local specialty&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leave a review of the exchange<\/strong>: after the exchange, you have the opportunity to leave ratings and comments on your respective experience. By going to the market or shopping like a local, you can discover new flavors and learn to cook like the locals. Every home exchange is an opportunity to establish links with people from all over the world, fostering intercultural sharing and open-mindedness. Ties can be forged with neighbors. In less economically developed countries, you can also experience the day-to-day concerns of the population, such as power or water cuts.    <\/li>\n<li><strong>Spacious, comfortable accommodation<\/strong>: forget standard hotel rooms! With home exchange, you have access to accommodation that is often more spacious and better equipped, offering an unrivalled level of comfort. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Flexibility and freedom<\/strong>: you can plan your trips at your own pace, choosing from a multitude of destinations and periods of stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Home exchange, answers to 10 frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<h3>1. What do you do with your personal belongings when you exchange your home?<\/h3>\n<p>When we exchange our apartment, all our personal belongings stay in the closets. It&#8217;s really only the things we consider valuable or sentimental that we lock away. We have complete confidence in the people who come to our apartment, or in any case we feel that nothing is worth hiding.  <\/p>\n<h3>2. Have you ever had personal belongings stolen?<\/h3>\n<p>No, nothing has disappeared. Whereas around the world, we&#8217;ve sometimes feared for our personal belongings (money, passport&#8230;) in hotel rooms where staff could drop by to clean, and take advantage of the opportunity to steal valuable possessions. <\/p>\n<h3>3. What to do for your first exchange<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to see how you feel on your first exchange, it&#8217;s best to start with an acquaintance or a couple of friends. Even if it&#8217;s just for a weekend, or between local residents, it&#8217;ll give you a chance to see how you feel afterwards, back home. Can I trade in my vehicle?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s possible! On several occasions we&#8217;ve used our guests&#8217; cars, and they&#8217;ve used ours too. If you wish to exchange your car for your home, the procedure is the same: <strong>you need to notify your insurance company, adjust your contract if necessary and formalize the exchange, including all the details and procedures in the event of a claim.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<h3>5. Is it possible to leave your animals in a kennel?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s also possible! Cats, dogs, goldfish, turtles &#8211; it can happen in the &#8220;deal&#8221; of the exchange that the people who own the house or apartment offer to feed and look after the house pet. Just like watering plants, for example, all you have to do is talk about it and agree on exactly what needs to be done in the owners&#8217; absence.  <\/p>\n<h3>6. Do I need to take out special insurance for guests?<\/h3>\n<p>To protect yourself against any eventuality, before exchanging your home, it&#8217; <strong>s best to declare the exchange to your insurer<\/strong> to make sure that the contract is appropriate, and to make any temporary modifications necessary for the exchange. Do I have to clean when I leave my home?<\/h3>\n<p>Logic dictates that you leave the apartment in the same condition as you found it. This means cleaning, removing dirty sheets and emptying garbage cans. Nowadays, it&#8217;s becoming increasingly common for landlords to offer you a cleaning service for a fee. This is not the policy of this website, however, so it&#8217;s up to you to decide. When we come for one or two days and there are two of us, we ask to do the cleaning. When there are more people and we&#8217;re staying for more than 3 days, the cost of cleaning sometimes comes down to a few euros per person, and if we have transport to take, we take the option for simplicity&#8217;s sake.     <\/p>\n<h3>9. Do you have to be a homeowner to do a home exchange?<\/h3>\n<p>As a tenant, it&#8217;s up to you to check the terms of your rental agreement and determine whether you need to inform your landlord before participating and inviting HomeExchange members into your home. If you&#8217;re not sure, it&#8217;s probably best to let your landlord know. Please note, however, that the website can in no way be held responsible if you invite people to your home when your rental contract forbids you to do so.  <\/p>\n<h3>10. Can I bring my own sheets and towels?<\/h3>\n<p>To motivate a landlord to accept an exchange of goods for a short period, one or two nights, it&#8217;s sometimes more practical to suggest in your message that you bring your own sheets and towels. This avoids the need for laundry and saves the host time.
