And what a pleasure it was to be back on the beaches, on the cycle paths, in the soft, iodized atmosphere, with its smiles, its craftsmen, its homemade jams and its melting chocolate! <\/p>\n<p>Ce s\u00e9jour nous a rappel\u00e9 que l\u2019<strong>on peut concilier vie boh\u00e8me de campeur, rencontres humaines, plaisirs simples et esth\u00e9tique soign\u00e9e<\/strong>. Que l\u2019essentiel se trouve parfois dans un lever de soleil sur la mer, une discussion avec un artisan, ou une d\u00e9gustation d\u2019hu\u00eetres face \u00e0 l\u2019oc\u00e9an. <\/p>\n<h2>A 5-star cocoon between beach and marsh<\/h2>\n<p>We parked our van at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campingocean.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camping L&#8217;Oc\u00e9an et Spa<\/a>, in La Couarde-sur-Mer, a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eden-villages.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eden Villages<\/a> network and nestled between sea and marsh. <strong>A bubble of nature<\/strong> where you can hear the birds in the morning and where everything has been <strong>thought of for campers who love authenticity<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7039 size-full\" title=\"Camping l'Oc\u00e9an et Spa Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" src=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC_1538.jpg\" alt=\"Camping l'Oc\u00e9an et Spa Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" width=\"795\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC_1538.jpg 795w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC_1538-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC_1538-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/DSC_1538-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to see why some holidaymakers have been coming back for over 50 years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A warm welcome,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bicycle rental directly on site<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li><strong>A wellness area with spa<\/strong> to relax your muscles after a day of hiking,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large, shady pitches<\/strong>, ideal for tents, vans or motorhomes, just 50 meters from the sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mais ce qui nous a particuli\u00e8rement touch\u00e9s, ce sont<strong> les petites attentions et l\u2019ancrage local du lieu<\/strong>. Mention sp\u00e9ciale pour <strong>l\u2019\u00e9picerie, o\u00f9 l\u2019on retrouve les douceurs embl\u00e9matiques de l\u2019\u00eele<\/strong>\u2026 qui racontent bien plus qu\u2019un simple plaisir gustatif. <\/p>\n<h2>From sweets to family history<\/h2>\n<p>Among these sweets are <strong>two unmissable nuggets: l&#8217;\u00eele de R\u00e9 chocolates and jams from the bell tower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019aventure chocolat\u00e9e<\/strong> d\u00e9bute avec la <strong>famille Vall\u00e9geas, pr\u00e9sente sur l\u2019\u00eele depuis 1975.<\/strong> Daniel Vall\u00e9geas, artisan boulanger-p\u00e2tissier-chocolatier, cr\u00e9e <strong>la biscuiterie de R\u00e9 \u00e0 Sainte-Marie-de-R\u00e9<\/strong>, un lieu o\u00f9 la tradition rime avec qualit\u00e9 : beurre AOP Charentes-Poitou, recettes sans additifs ni conservateurs. Galettes, sabl\u00e9s, langues de chat, palets \u00e0 la fleur de sel\u2026 autant de douceurs aux saveurs simples et authentiques. <\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1995, his son \u00c9ric joined the family business and launched the chocolate workshop in Saint-Martin-de-R\u00e9,<\/strong> giving birth to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iledere-chocolats.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00cele de R\u00e9 Chocolats<\/a> brand. Here, he imagines original creations blending terroir and creativity: Fort Boyard in chocolate, pommes de terre de l&#8217;\u00eele de R\u00e9, a crunchy hazelnut praline, and many other specialties. The workshop also offers guided tours, where young and old alike can discover the secrets of cocoa and artisanal production.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>C\u00f4t\u00e9 confitures<\/strong>, la tradition familiale se perp\u00e9tue \u00e0 <strong>Ars-en-R\u00e9, au pied du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre clocher noir et blanc qui veille sur le village<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesconfituresduclocher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les Confitures du Clocher<\/a> sont une v\u00e9ritable institution locale. Tout commence dans les ann\u00e9es 70 avec Claude, producteur de fraises, et sa femme Fran\u00e7oise, qui se lancent dans la confection maison de confitures quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard. Aujourd\u2019hui, leur fils Bertrand, ma\u00eetre confiturier, perp\u00e9tue ce savoir-faire artisanal avec passion.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Trois g\u00e9n\u00e9rations se transmettent des recettes pr\u00e9cieusement gard\u00e9es<\/strong>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es avec des fruits cueillis \u00e0 point, du sucre et surtout beaucoup d\u2019amour. Sur chaque pot, le clocher d\u2019Ars figure en clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2me de ce terroir unique. This time, we took the time to explore less touristy but equally charming corners of the city: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>La Couarde-sur-Mer<\/strong>, with <strong>its narrow, flower-filled streets and peaceful atmosphere<\/strong>. And for fashionistas, this is where you&#8217;ll find one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emileetida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c9mile et Ida<\/a>&#8216;s boutiques. More than just a children&#8217;s clothing store, it&#8217;s a place that embodies a philosophy: to offer ethical, sustainable collections made mainly in Europe, combining comfort, elegance and poetry. It&#8217;s hard to choose between the many flavors<em>(with special mention for the caramel fleur de sel or the more original oyster or asparagus flavors!<\/em>), but it&#8217;s impossible to go wrong: everything is delicious.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7035 size-full\" title=\"Glace la martini\u00e8re Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" src=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/la-martiniere.jpg\" alt=\"Glace la martini\u00e8re Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" width=\"795\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/la-martiniere.jpg 795w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/la-martiniere-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/la-martiniere-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/la-martiniere-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>D&#8217;ailleurs, en restant sur Saint-Martin-de-R\u00e9, ce que j\u2019adore sur l\u2019\u00eele, c\u2019est cette alchimie unique entre nature, \u00e9l\u00e9gance et boh\u00e8me.<\/strong> On peut vivre pieds nus, en maillot de bain, et en m\u00eame temps <strong>croiser des boutiques ultra cr\u00e9atives.<\/strong> Un \u00e9quilibre que peu de lieux savent pr\u00e9server. C&#8217;est l\u00e0 que j&#8217;ai eu un gros coup de c\u0153ur pour Le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/magasindelarepublique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magasin de la R\u00e9publique<\/a>, un <strong>concept store <\/strong>qui propose une<strong> s\u00e9lection pointue de v\u00eatements<\/strong> \u00e9thiques, dont la marque Homecore, imagin\u00e9e par un ancien danseur de hip-hop. Et on y trouve de belles id\u00e9es cadeaux (ou auto-cadeaux).  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7036 size-full\" title=\"Magasin de la R\u00e9publique Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" src=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/magasin-republique.jpg\" alt=\"Magasin de la R\u00e9publique Ile de R\u00e9 | Jupette et Salopette\" width=\"424\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/magasin-republique.jpg 424w, https:\/\/jupetteetsalopette.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/magasin-republique-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Among the other suspended moments of this escapade, I also remember a <strong>magical sunset at Saint-Cl\u00e9ment-des-Baleines, sheltered against the small lifeboat<\/strong> facing the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>And then&#8230; a little personal challenge: <strong>I got out my rollerblades again to take to the cycle paths<\/strong>, skirt the marshes, feel the sea air in my hair&#8230; <strong>Unfortunately, the most suitable paths for skateboarding or rollerblading are those along the roads.<\/strong> So, for ease of use, <strong>I still recommend a bike or tandem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>My final tips for a slow Retais holiday<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Choose off-season periods<\/strong>: May-June or early September are ideal (excluding long weekends). Temperatures are mild, shopkeepers are available and bike paths are almost all yours. <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Go\u00fbtez aux produits du terroir<\/strong> : les douceurs \u00e9voqu\u00e9es plus haut, mais aussi le sel, la bi\u00e8re locale, les savons, les hu\u00eetres\u2026 L\u2019\u00eele regorge de tr\u00e9sors \u00e0 consommer ou \u00e0 offrir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can&#8217;t visit the island of R\u00e9. You have to live it. And it stays with you for a long, long time&#8230; in your heart.  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And you, what are your memories of the island?
